    Default Cholestorol

It was mentioned on another thread

Mines quite high, not so much my dietry but the HDL and Trigs.
So I decided to do something about is and bought some Simvastin (Statins).

After a week of taking them I found a web site which detailed all the side effects of Statins.

I phoned my sister who also has it, and when she read the site she said she was exhibiting signs of what was mentioned on the site. Shes stopped taking them and now the signs have slowly gone

So how do you tackle this problem when the drugs you take can be equally as dangerous!!

    Diet I guess, but what?

I can't swear to how true it is but I've read that the list of side effects related to a particular drug are as reported by the trial group, who are asked record EVERYTHING they feel during the period.
So if someone has an heavy session one night they would record sweats, vomiting, headache and lethargy on the next days record sheet - actually nowt to do with the drug on trial.

A recent paper from a Scottish uni - reccomended everyone over 45 went on statins - they calculated the saving to the health service would be about £3b per year - don't think this was due to hastening deaths though, more a reduction in heart disease.

Yeah, but I'm not talking about minor things like that.
My sister was on drugs for several months
She is an MD, and she found it was strange that she was finding it difficult to make decisions so easily. She also began to suffer from very bad memory, aches, fuzzy head.

The forum I found described irreversable damage to vital organs and all kinds of stuff

Now I know that there will always be some reactions, but I did find an awful lot of this stuff

    Google Statins side effects

Too much dodgy info for me there mitz - makes sense to me that as more peeps use a drug there is more chance of people developing all sorts of illnesses while taking it and this could feed negative assumptions of the drugs contribution?

I think the bit I read about primary risk would sway it for me - if you're 40+, fat, lazy, smoke & have high cholestoral get the statins out. If you're none of the above then maybe keep on "as you were"?

I think I get a full house in the first list........ "Doc? about these Statin thingies................."

Oh I agree about the percentages for sure
But the risk is too great if theres an alternative, i.e natural remedies and diet

    Hi Mitz

Have just found this thread, diet will help lower your cholestrol and it can be controlled quite well by diet alone, but if there is a history of high cholestrol in you family them medication may be the only way.

If you google Dr. Martin Crook or Dr. Anthony Wierzbicki and look for "The Specialised Lipid Laborotory" at Guy's and St. Thomas (try http://www.guy'sandstthomas.nhs/service ... cular/labs) this may give you an in sight to what treatment is available. I worked with both of the men and in my opinion you will have to go a long way to find someone who knows more about Lipids than Martin and Tony.

If after you come back from UK next week you want me to contact them for you I am sure Martin would be very helpful.

Also google Prof. R Swaminathan, (also of Chem Path and clinc chem at guy's and st thomas) I know he has wrote many medical papers on this subject, as of course Martin and Tony have. Just checked MArtin has over 120 paper,
