Default I got points on my UK driving licence in Spain but I am not a resident!

Can this be possible? I thought only Spanish residents could get points the rest get a fine?

    Thanks

Hi Delboy and welcome to the site.

If you have a Spanish NIE number then as far as the points base system goes you are considered a resident so therefore they were correct in giving points.

how were you notified of the points ?

I know someone that recieved a speeding fine for a hire car...they got it by post when they returned to UK from their hol, they have decided to ignore it but I do wonder if any further action will be taken against them..they did have an NIE about 7 years ago, not sure if this is still valid

Nie or not, the fine will stay until payed and the next time they are coming to Spain if a court summons has been issued in the meantime they could spend their holiday courtesy of the King.

I believe it's automatic however you should get notification in the post, which will probably never arrive as the post in Spain is crap!

As dj mentioned if ignored after a certain amount of time it becomes more important and perhaps being stopped at the airport is dramatic (but I can see it happening in the near future if it's not already) if they ever get stopped again by the GC then as mentioned it will be a nice visit to the police station at best and a cell in the worst case scenario

What I would do in this circumstance is pay the fine, it's not worth the hassle and also check the DGT.es website and enter my NIE to see if any points have been added. There is a thread on here to help guide a person through both processes!

There was a thread elsewhere last year involving someone who hadn't paid a fine years previously. They returned to Spain on a family holiday and he was promptly arrested at the airport and sent straight to prison.

Our friends speeding fine caught up with them 7 years after the event, 75euros when issued but 500e in 2 installments straight from their Spanish bank account without being notified. The bank could't help really just said it was Traffico which meant a trip into Cadiz and a lot of running around, this was after the first payment they said nothing about the 2nd payment coming out so she had to go month the following month.

The fine was for speeding before they moved out here, once they got NIE and bank account they were found took 7 years but they got her
